PAINTING A CITY

PROJECT OUTLINE
Oi YOU! were tasked by Christchurch City Council to uplift the city with amazing street art. With 80% of the CBD lost to earthquakes people had to know that the city was bouncing back. This drive has continued across three major festivals; firstly RISE and then two under the name of SPECTRUM.

CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS
Finding walls to paint is the easy part; it’s seeking permission from building owners that is often the toughest hurdle. Then we have artists to engage, contracts to draw up, travel and accommodation to organise, visas to source, paint and material to acquire and health and safety measures to put in place.

OUTCOMES
Since RISE in 2013 we have overseen the painting of almost 40 murals in central Christchurch, more than in any other city in the southern hemisphere. The city now attracts huge numbers of tourists who come specifically to see the murals and now Christchurch has been included in the .

CONTRACTED MURAL

PROJECT OUTLINE
Christchurch Council approached us to help them deliver a large mural on the wall of a Recreation Centre. They wanted an artwork that represented the diversity and vitality of New Zealand with broad local appeal.

CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS
With the Centre under redevelopment, we needed to work in partnership with the main contractor. We also we had to get a deep understanding of the clients requirements to identify the best possible artist. We then worked with the artist to offer up three options for the client to select from. Finally we liaised with the Council’s project manager, the artist and the contractor to ensure that the job was delivered safely and on time.

OUTCOMES
The mural has been a massive hit, with hundreds of patrons now using the centre again it has become a local landmark. The success of this project has led the Council to actively look at incorporating street art on public buildings. The Council’s project manager won a PMINZ award for her work on this project.

INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION

PROJECT OUTLINE
For SPECTRUM 2 we wanted an artwork that visitors actually had to walk through. We came up with the idea of 4 giant sheets of Perspex and exploding a painting through them. They would be offset left and right so visitors had to zig zag through them, only when they got to the end would the complete image be revealed.

CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS
We had to figure out how to suspend the Perspex and find an artist with the technical ability to deliver it. Sofles was one of the few artists on the planet that could pull off this level of intricacy. Together we figured out that image had to be projected, from there it was down to the exceptional talent of the artist.

OUTCOMES
Of the nine installations in SPECTRUM 2, this was a firm visitor favourite. This seminal artwork attracted huge global attention. Alerted by the inclusion of Sofles, a Melbourne based magazine came to visit and resulted in excess of 30,000 views on Facebook.
